The movie theater experience is one that I will never fully shun, regardless of how unjustly the prices inflate. Since moving to New York (from a rural town in Southeast Ohio where I could get a movie ticket for $4 for matinee and evening shows alike), I have had to cut down the frequency that I visit the cinema. Granted, there are much more exciting activities going on in New York City than there were in Ohio, so I do not need to depend on the movie theater for entertainment like I once had to, but sometimes a bag of popcorn and a large Dr. Pepper in a movie theater is just what I need, and I will forfeit $12.50 for the experience.

I recently saw the new Wes Anderson film
Fantastic Mr. Fox at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13. Yes, I really enjoyed the movie, and yes, it was much the same aesthetic and theme as every other Wes Anderson film. But this is not a film review. The reason that I am posting about going to see this movie has nothing to do with the actual movie. It has to do with the fact that I saw the movie for SIX DOLLARS! An unbelievably discounted amount to see a movie...in a theater...in NYC.
The stipulation: you have to see a movie before 12pm to get the markdown of $6. While it may feel slightly unnatural to sit in a dark movie theater before noon (indeed it did), it is worth it to save $6.50--that is if you can relate to the economic plight of me and most of my friends.
So next time you are hankering for a good cinema experience but are feeling like a tightwad, set your alarm and hit the movie theater before your brunch date. This way you can justify that extra mimosa.
