Little Buddy Biscuit Co. Gets the Gong of Approval

The goodies at Little Buddy Biscuit Co. have nothing to do with dog treats, as the name may misleadingly suggest. There is also nothing little about the flavors that head chef, Pete Solomita, packs into his baked goods. I had one bite and deemed it worthy of a blog post. Seriously.

In fact, I decided to shoot a video piece about the delicious baked good in the store, it's impressive head chef/Renaissance man, and its deep-seeded roots in the newly gentrified area of the South Slope. The video will be posted here and on Trip Films soon (and a shout-out to Janelle for being my ever-enthusiastic videographer). For now, a short blog post to wet your whistle. (Below is a picture of me with Mr. Solomita).
South Slope is the up-and-coming area just South of Park Slope in Brooklyn. Park Slope is known for its top-rated restaurants, shops, and its fair share of baby strollers crowding the sidewalks. There are many prosperous Manhattanites who decided to relocate to a quieter borough to raise children and have made Park Slope their destination. Walk just a couple blocks south and you will find an ever younger group of people who have chosen the area because it is more economically sound than living in Manhattan but offers the perks of living a short walk from incredible restaurants, bars, and boutiques. Slowly but surely, stores with credentials to satisfy the neighborhood's foodies are popping up around the South Slope.

Little Buddy Biscuit Co. is one of these places. Pete Solomita has lived in the South Slope for about thirty years and has seen the neighborhood emerge culturally and economically. In 2007, the New York Times actually wrote an article about Pete and his wife, Jill, because they moved to the South Slope when it was "awash with drugs and apartments were cheap." That same apartment was the one that Mr. Solomita started his bakery out of and named it after his newborn son, Jack, who he called "Little Buddy" while he was in utero.

But let's get real, Pete's story of Brooklyn musician-turned-chef and stay-at-home dad-turned-entrepreneur is not enough to make a visit to Little Buddy Biscuit Co. We all like a good story, but what we love are buttery, sugary treats that will put a drooling grin on our faces. This place delivers. Again, I'll post my video soon, but until then, just take my word and make the trip. When you do, you'll get the "Gong of Approval" reference in my title...
