The Randomness of New York City Epitomized

Monday morning I went to yoga at Yoga To the People. (It's a donation based yoga studio in the East Village. I highly recommend it!) I was walking from the studio to the subway and passed a film set. In New York, this is not a rare occurrence so I nearly circumvented the scene without even glancing at the action. When I did look over, though, I recognized one of the extras standing to the side. He was an extra for the Rob Thomas music video "Someday" I was in a couple months ago. I caught his attention and asked him what this project he was working on and he answered briefly before he was called to attention. I said goodbye, that is was good to run into him, and went along my merry way.

Two blocks later he came jogging up behind me. He tracked me down to give me the contact information of the casting director for the film and told me I should get in touch with him because it was a really good group of people working on the project. Next thing I know, I am working on this film for the next three days! It's been a blast! It's an indie film called It's Not You starring Steve Guttenberg and Shannon Elizabeth. The whole cast and crew was awesome. It was a small production so everyone has come to know each other and that kind of rapport has made it a truly valuable experience.

So there you have it. If being in the Rob Thomas music video wasn't random enough, how about running into an extra I met from that shoot on my way home from yoga and then working on a film with the guy who played Mary-Kate and Ashley's dad in It Takes Two. That's random. That's New York City, folks.

As a quick post script I must add that Steve Guttenberg is officially one of my favorite people of all time. He calls me "Kate!" (no one really calls me Kate but I let it slide for Steve) and is ridiculously kind and good-humored. I feel like he's my uncle. If only he were...
