My Grandma Sally was is 100% Italian...and she cooks like it. One food item that I will always associate with her is biscotti, the twice-baked cookie-like treat that is heavenly paired with a cup of coffee in the morning.
The traditional biscotti is made with anise extract (my grandma usually put almonds in it, too), but there are many variations of the crunchy snack. As a chocolate addict, I love Grandma Sally's chocolate and walnut biscotti, pictured above in her kitchen, although G-ma admits that they are less than traditional "Italian." I scarf them regardless.
I always associate biscotti with the holiday season. There tends to be a volumous supply waiting for me back home for Christmas. Recently I expressed my desire to learn how Grandma Sally makes her addictive biscotti and she showed me her tricks, step by step, for several of her biscotti variations.
This weekend I will have a day dedicated to making Grandma's biscotti. Tis' the season, and I feel that it is about time I represent my Italian heritage, which, as a tall, pale blonde I do not often have the privledge of doing. I am going to recreate Grandma's biscotti and it is going to be delicious.
