So Many Apples, So Many Choices!

I try to visit a Farmer's Market every weekend. There are a lot of them throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn (surely the other boroughs, too, but I'm speaking from experience, here). There more than you might think, I often stumble across one just walking around.

There are so many things about the Farmer's Market that I love. Fresh, colorful produce, innovative baked goods, and little children running animatedly from booth to booth. But what I love above all are the samples, and at the top of this list is the apple samples! If you think that you do not have an apple preference, you should do a taste comparison at your local market.

My taste results:

The winner is: FUJI--They're sweet and reliably crisp. Crispness is a must-have for me when it comes to apples and Fujis never disappoint. They are popular so you can easily find them at your local grocery store and they are not "exotic" enough to be overpriced like Asian Pears (a hybrid of an apple and a pear).

Runners-up: BRAEBURN and HONEYCRISP.

The loser is: RED DELICIOUS. I'll give them the red, but to say that they're delicious is simply hyperbole. The skin is too bitter for my liking and the texture loses its crispness rapidly. If there is one thing I dislike in an apple it is mushiness, for which the red delicious apple has an affinity.
